Service here is AWFUL. Went to buy an individual alcoholic beverage that didn’t scan and they tried to argue with me that they’re sold in a pack even after I clearly showed them that they stocked them individually on the wall. If you wanna sell shit correctly, stock it correctly, but don’t make it your customer’s issue.

I've been shopping at Food Universe for almost seven years (since summer 2016), and it has usually been a reliable place to buy basic groceries. About a year ago, the store underwent a gradual--but extensive--makeover which has made the shopping experience more pleasant, even though product selection has remained much the same. BUT...

...my biggest concern with the store--and the main reason shoppers should be wary of shopping here--is that the management *routinely* advertises false prices for goods or does not label prices at all. It is extremely common to see the price advertised as one thing (even with a recent price label, such as for sale items) and then to see the prices $1-2 higher for that item at checkout. Recent examples just from my last shopping trip (see attached photos): a jar of tomato sauce (advertised price: $6.99; actual price: $7.99), avocados (advertised price: $0.99 each; actual price: $2 each), chia seeds (advertised price: $7.99; actual price: $9.29). Importantly, these discrepancies have nothing to do with the shopper's club discount, which everyone seems to get regardless of having signed up. Everyone has noticed increases in grocery prices over the last few years as a result of ongoing inflation. But the situation at Food Universe is not about inflation. This is about mis-advertising prices in a highly unethical way that possibly violates NYC consumer protection laws as well. Twice, I have approached staff about these discrepancies, and have gotten just a shrug.

If you are interested in a better shopping experience in the broader Hamilton Heights area, I would recommend the Super Food Town at 161st Street, which is bigger, better, and cheaper. Honestly, even the Key Foods at 146th Street is at least as good as Food Universe in terms of product quality, and is definitely cheaper.

This store is unreasonably overpriced. Foodtown stores in the neighborhood are much cheaper for the same products. Even Whole Foods is literally cheaper than this store: I did a price comparison and Whole Foods came about 40% cheaper for the equivalent order.

FRIENDLY SERVICE ! My wife walked down here yesterday and picked up a couple of packs of Haagen-Dazs ice cream bars, a very good papaya, a dish cloth & a pair of rubber gloves. After getting off the subway this afternoon we popped in here to grab a pack of one gal ziploc bags and some Tylenol tabs. THERE'S MORE ! We came back a couple of more times for craft beer, orange juice, ice cream bars, bottled water & more. THEY GOT A LOT OF GOOD STUFF IN HERE !

Quality is way worse and prices of items are over double that what can be found at other groceries such as Whole Foods. A gallon of organic milk is $16 vs $9 at Whole Foods

This grocery store is clean and newly renovated, but it's horribly overpriced. After they underwent renovations last summer- and it was fine beforehand- I noticed that now maybe half of the products have price tags, even fewer are actually accurate, and afterward there was an immediate spike in prices.
Additionally, there is year-round air conditioning for no reason. Even during the coldest winter days, it's colder inside the store than outside. Not only does this make it a very uncomfortable shopping experience, it also makes me wonder if that's the reason for their inflated prices. Either way, it's unnecessary, and it makes no sense.
I try to avoid shopping here as much as I can, because every store at least ten blocks north or south of it have way more reasonable prices. I wish they would stop taking advantage of people and return to better practices.
I do not recommend shopping here unless you really have to, or if you have money to blow on overpriced groceries.
